Our tutor, Virginia Listanti, has invited us to enjoy her recent trip to Sicily. Following the coastline, we will start and end our journey in Palermo – exploring Cefalù, Messina, Catania, Siracusa, Modica, Noto, Agrigento and Trapani.
Dr Sally Hill (Senior Lecturer in Italian at Victoria University of Wellington) is working on a research project on the life and works of Italian New Zealand writer Renato (known as "Michael") Amato (1928- 1964), who was born in Potenza, studied in Turin and worked in Naples and Rome before moving to New Zealand in 1954. Sally's research looks at what immigration to New Zealand meant for Renato Amato, particularly in terms of questions of cultural identity and how he made the change from writing in Italian to English. She would love to hear from anyone who remembers him. If you are able to help, please contact her.
Congratulations to Club Member Joseph Zino, who recently won the NZ Indoor Bowls Champion of Champions Singles title and who with his father, John, skippered the team to the National Indoors Fours title, so a double celebration! Every district sends their winners to the National Final, which was held in Dunedin this year with 36 players entered. Joseph is the first Italian to win this title. See article below from the Dominion Post on 23 September 2009.
The Migrating Kitchen exhibition, which was recently held at the Pataka Museum, Porirua, featured an Italian section where people were able to explore the kitchen space, sample food and find recipes. Thanks to club members Anna Quinn and the Basile family, and to Maria Colucci and Lucy Esposito, who were involved with the organisation of this exhibition. Nina Cuccurullo, along with Teresa Cuccurullo and Dolores Di Leva, all of Island Bay, represented the Club at the closing event held on Sunday, 13 September. For further information about the exhibition and past events, check out the following website: http://www.migratingkitchen.org
On the first Sunday of every month the Mass is celebrated in Italian at the Church of St Francis de Sales, 175 Clyde Street, Island Bay, Wellington. Mass starts at 11.30am and everyone is welcome and it would be good to see more members and their families attend as we are very fortunate to have this opportunity in New Zealand. The Mass is celebrated by either His Excellency Archbishop Balvo or Reverend Marinko Antolovic from the Apostolic Nunciature.
