Fantastico! The Aldo Cuccurullo Memorial Trophy will now spend the next 12 months (and longer we hope) housed in the Club Garibaldi clubrooms following our 1-0 win in the 20th annual football game against Club Italia.
The cornu, cornuto, or cornicello refer to a long, gently twisted horn-shaped Italian amulet of ancient origin. Cornicelli are usually carved out of red coral or made of gold or silver, and were worn as a symbol in ancient times when the moon goddess was worshipped, before the rise of Christianity in Europe, to give protection from the evil eye and to ward off evil. Other superstitions link it to sexual power and good luck. It is often worn with a cross, perhaps for double protection or luck! The Italian cornu is no longer used for protection today. Rather, it may be used as a good luck charm, a fashion statement or a symbol of pride in one's Italian heritage.
Club Garibaldi heartily congratulates John Zino of Island Bay, on winning the Hutt Valley Indoor Bowls singles title which featured four centres. Another club member, Marcus Trlin, reached the semi finals - well done, Marcus! Over the years many fine bowls players from within the club membership have also won this award. They are: Lou Cancian, Giorgio Benvenuti, Bert Volpi, Cataldo Mollo, Stephen Zino and John Zino.
